Future Center

The Future Center staff will offer the technical, material and social support students need to pursue postsecondary education and career goals. As part of a longstanding community partnership, a team of Butler University writing tutors and volunteers will work alongside Future Center staff to provide additional support and mentorship.

Enrollment

The Future Center will provide students with the tools and resources they need to successfully enroll into a post-secondary institution, including Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) assistance, financial literacy for students and parents, college or trade school advising, scholarship information, application materials prep, and other student success initiatives.

College entrance exams are standardized tests that measure a student’s aptitude or potential for future success. Many colleges and universities use the scores from these exams to consider whether a student will be a good fit for their institution academically and whether they will be successful. College entrance exam scores are just one part of the college admissions application process; and depending on the college/university, they may be weighed more or less heavily than other factors such as GPA, course selection, essays, extracurricular activities, recommendation letters, etc.

Most colleges and universities require students to submit college entrance exam scores as part of their admissions application, so it is imperative that students take these tests to ensure that they keep all available options open when searching for a college fit. In many cases, a student’s college application will not be considered complete without test scores; however, there are some colleges that maintain a “test optional” policy, meaning that students can choose whether or not to submit their scores OR choose how their scores are used. It is important for students to read the admissions requirements on a college’s website carefully to understand whether test scores are required for admissions.

Enlistment

To ensure students are knowledgeable of all the options and avenues that the military has to offer, the Future Center will expose visitors to military-career opportunities, Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) prep, and military Q&A sessions hosted by recruiters and active duty members.

If you choose to pursue a military, you could experience a military education in prestigious surroundings, followed by a stable, interesting career. You will also receive a free college education, and every branch has an academy. There are also tuition programs that will help you become a leader in a military setting while earning a college education at the same time.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple choice test, administered by the United States Military Entrance Processing Command, used to determine qualification for enlistment in the United States Armed Forces.

Employment

The Future Center will aid students with the skills and opportunities necessary to obtain meaningful employment that will support independent living, including interview techniques, résumé writing, career fairs, and internship connections.

Many high demand, high paying careers do not require a 4-year degree. All students should expect to need to continue their education in some way after high school, including on-the-job training, apprenticeships, certificate programs, associate’s degrees, and sometimes bachelor’s degrees.

Of course, not everyone can afford to invest in a full-time, traditional degree program right after high school. Lacking a college degree does not have to restrict your career choices. About 30% of the Hoosier Hot 50 jobs require less than a bachelor’s degree (Indiana’s Top Occupations). Many professionals start their careers in retail sales, customer service or other entry-level positions. While these positions may not be glamorous, employees in them earn more than just a salary: they also earn real-world job experience.
