Our History

In a beautiful wooded setting on the northwest side of Indianapolis, Meredith Nicholson School #96 opened its doors on September 4, 1962, with an enrollment of 654 pupils and 17 classrooms. This school was dedicated on May 17, 1963 and is named for Indiana author Meredith Nicholson. Nicholson was born in Crawfordsville, IN in 1866. During the 1965-1966 school year, 11 of Mr. Nicholson’s books were purchased by the PTA. These books and an original drawing of Mr. Nicholson are kept on display in the front foyer of the school. During the 1967-1968 academic year, a library was begun with funds from the Parent Teacher Association and Title II. Nine new classrooms were opened in the fall of 1968. The spring of 1969 saw the official opening of the library and the gymnasium/auditorium. School enrollment at this time was 745 students in grades kindergarten through 6.

In the early 1990′s Meredith Nicholson Elementary, along with other IPS Elementary Schools were converted to house only students in grades kindergarten through five. In recent years many IPS elementary schools (including Meredith Nicholson) have returned to house kindergartners through sixth graders. In the fall of 2013 the school population grew, and students in grades five and six were housed at Gambold Preparatory Academy, less than one block from Meredith Nicholson.

This year, as we begin school, all students, faculty and staff are under one roof again at 3651 N. Kiel Avenue. Presently, Meredith Nicholson Elementary School has an enrollment of close to 550 students. The school is the largest English as a Second Language site in the Indianapolis Public Schools district. The ESL program provides services beyond the general education curriculum for students who are learning the English Language. Approximately 85% of our students utilize these services. Over the years, students from approximately 18 different countries have been enrolled at Meredith Nicholson. Flags representing these countries are hanging in the foyer of the school. We are proud to be public!
