Starting in the 2023-24 school year, we are merging with Paul I. Miller School 114, creating a vibrant, newly consolidated K-5 school. This transition is part of the Rebuilding Stronger Plan, an initiative by the IPS to consolidate its schools into zones, streamline resources, and ensure consistent, high-quality education across the district.
Frederick Douglass School 19 will no longer be an Innovation School. Instead, we’ll directly be managed by IPS, under the capable leadership of Daria Parham, the principal of Paul I. Miller School 114.
This merger signifies an opportunity for growth and improvement. We’re moving to a larger, better-quality facility at Frederick Douglass School 19, rated much higher in condition than our former building. This move not only offers our students an improved learning environment but also ensures stability for those who frequently move within Indianapolis.
The merger also brings together the strengths of two schools. Paul I. Miller School 114 has shown significant growth in student achievement, with students surpassing the IPS average for Math and more than 80% passing the IREAD assessment, which measures literacy levels for third graders. We believe that under the continued leadership of Principal Parham, we will maintain and build on this momentum at Frederick Douglass School 19.
In the 2024-25 school year, we will reconfigure to serve grades K-5 and exclusively serve Zone 4. This change is part of an overall plan to ensure the stability of school assignments for our students and provide them with the most supportive, consistent learning environment possible.
We understand that transitions can be challenging, and we’re committed to making this process as smooth and positive as possible for our students, parents, and staff. We invite you to stay updated, ask questions, and provide feedback throughout this process.
Your child’s educational journey is our top priority, and we’re excited to step into this new chapter together, stronger and better.
Thank you for being a part of our school community. Let’s move forward into this new chapter together, building a brighter future for our children and community.
