I attended the University of Illinois at Chicago for my first two degrees in education. I actually first went to the university to major in mechanical engineering, but when I volunteered to tutor on the Westside of Chicago (Homan Square), I fell in love with teaching and have dedicated my life to this calling. My first two years of teaching I taught third graders in Dolton, IL and began serving on the board of the Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics. My second year of teaching third grade I returned to the University to major in Literacy, Language and Learning to be a better resource to the school communities that I serve/d. My third year of teaching I married my phenomenal, intelligent and beautiful partner of 6 years, Dr. Kara M Taylor. This year I began teaching Literacy and Social Sciences to grades 3-5 students in Chicago Public Schools. At the conclusion of that year my partner became a professor at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and we moved here to Indianapolis and have been here for the past five years.
My first year in Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) I taught ¾ Math and Science at George Buck Elementary. My second year I served as a mathematics coach and Algebra I teacher at Daniel Webster 46. My third year I served as the district middle school math coach. Last year I had the honor of coming to work with the community here at 70, and I loved it so much I came back for a second year. While also teaching and coaching within IPS I also teach undergraduate courses at IUPUI for future mathematics educators.
When I am not teaching or in completing my doctoral dissertation, I enjoy running with my running club (Black Men Run – Indianapolis Chapter), reading science fiction and books about mathematics, spending time with my partner and our son Fonny!
