District Bee Champs

Despite the nerves and some tears, 18 IPS
students made it through the competition at the 2017 IPS District Spelling Bee.
Three scholars — out of the 56 who participated — clinched the top three spots
at the bee, held Jan. 26 inside Anderson Auditorium at Arsenal Technical High
School.

Kevin Viera (Ernie Pyle School 90),
Aaliyah Barnett (Edison School of the Arts School 47) and Sarah Cummings
(Center for Inquiry School 84), won first, second and third place,
respectively.

They, along with 15 other IPS students,
will compete in the Marion County Regional Spelling Bee on Sunday, March 5, at
the IUPUI Campus Center Theater, 420 University Blvd. Sponsored by IUPUI, the
regional bee consists of 30 of the top spellers in Marion County.

“The students were fantastic! I am proud of all of our spelling
competitors,” said Kathy Herald, ELA content specialist in the Department of
Curriculum and Instruction at IPS, who coordinates the bee for the district. “Participants
were supportive of each other throughout the spelling bee. … The final
rounds were very competitive but great sportsmanship was constantly displayed.”
