A WINNING TEAM — The 2017 Attucks Boys Varsity Basketball Team (above) took home sectional and championship wins in the Class3A tournament.
Indiana high school basketball is approaching its apex as the champions for the girls season will be crowned this weekend, and the boys state tournament is set to tip off next week with three-round sectional brackets.
Most of this year’s IPS girls’ basketball teams were met with early defeat, but Crispus Attucks advanced to the sectional championship game before being eliminated by the Ritter Raiders in a hard-fought contest, falling short of earning back-to-back sectional titles.
The boys teams will look to fare a bit better this year as they prepare for their sectionals, which begin Tuesday, Feb. 27.
Class 4A Arsenal Tech (4-16) will face the toughest first-round matchup in the tournament when they take on an undefeated, No. 1 ranked Warren Central (24-0) team on opening night in the Warriors’ home gym at 7:30 p.m.
All three of IPS’ Class 3A schools will compete Wednesday, Feb. 28 at Guerin Catholic.
Two IPS schools will collide at 6 p.m. when Broad Ripple (11-8) takes on Northwest (3-18) in both schools’ final outing in the tournament. The two teams faced off earlier in February when Ripple cruised to a home victory.
The defending 3A champion Crispus Attucks Tigers (16-4) will look to start another spectacular title run when they take on rival Brebeuf (14-7) immediately following the Northwest/Broad Ripple game.
The remaining three IPS schools compete in Class 2A at Speedway High School.
The Shortridge Blue Devils (5-15) will be the first 2A IPS team to hit the court, taking on a similarly talented Park Tudor (7-14) team on February 28 at 6pm.
Arlington (14-8) comes into this year’s tournament looking to shake off the full-court buzzer-beater loss they suffered in last year’s opening round. The Golden Knights will take on Heritage Christian (8-15) after the Shortridge game.
The George Washington Continentals (10-13) were fortunate to land a bye in the first round and will play in the second round on Friday, March 2, taking on the winner of the Scecina/Speedway game.
All teams who come out on top in their first-round games will play in the second round on Friday, March 2, along with the Continentals. Sectional championship games are set for Saturday, March 3. This could result in a couple second-round district matchups if the results shake out properly.
If 3A powerhouse Attucks advances, they will clash with the winner of the Ripple and Northwest game. Arlington and Shortridge could meet in the second round of their 2A sectional, and from there could potentially face Washington in their sectional championship.
Regionals will be held on Saturday, March 10, leading to semi-states on March 17 and the state championships on March 24.
