Indianapolis Public Schools’ (IPS) sustainability program has dramatically reduced energy consumption as part of the Better Buildings Initiative of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), designed to improve the lives of American people by driving leadership in energy.

“Our plan to reduce energy consumption while preserving a high-quality learning environment is well underway,” said Scott Martin, deputy superintendent for operations. “The commitment we made with the Better Buildings Initiative drives our innovative approach to energy efficiency.”

School utility bills are one of the largest budget items for districts. Since partnering with Cenergistic, a national energy conservation company, IPS has accelerated progress in the initiative — achieving an 11 percent energy performance improvement since June 2018; the largest improvement for IPS since 2013. IPS has recovered millions of dollars that can now go toward student programing, teacher compensation and cutting funding gaps. The accelerated progress has allowed IPS to revise the initial plan of a 20-percent savings by 2025, to now achieve it by 2020.

“Through partners like Cenergistic, who help optimize our energy use, we’ve been able to improve results as we increase our efforts to reduce energy consumption and promote the continued success of our school district,” said Martin.

District officials also see a mindset of energy conservation growing among faculty, staff, and students since the program started, with hopes for a more sustainable future. The program further reinforces commitment to and earns recognition for energy innovation and efficiency through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Initiative.

“I’d like to thank the DOE for its leadership in sustainability and also acknowledge the great work our staff has done to bring the program to life across the district,” said Martin.

The district is positioned to achieve its goal of more than $7.5 million in net savings over a five year period, creating a brighter future for its 30,000 students.
