“Abigail is so full of
inspiration and artistic energy,” said Arsenal Tech Art teacher Lacey Banuelos, who nominated Abby for the scholarship. “It is amazing to see the creative flow
as she works. She has dedicated an abundant amount of time to and energy
to her art and every second shows. She is incredibly humble and always open for
ideas and suggestion which only encourages her growth as an artist. She
has been simply amazing to work with and definitely has ample artistic
opportunities ahead of her. I am excited to see her growth throughout the
rest of her time here at Tech as I’ve encouraged her to take more advanced art
classes, and I can’t wait to see the creative skills she will gain from the
Herron Scholarship. She is genuinely a fantastic student all the way
around.  Congratulations Abby!”

Abby’s work is currently on display in the Artsgarden at Circle Centre Mall as part of the Arts Council of Indianapolis’ 20th Annual Art and Soul celebration. With her Herron scholarship, Abby will be able to attend the school’s Saturday School sessions with a focus on illustration this spring. The well-known Saturday School program is nearly a century in the making; Herron has hosted weekend courses for young students to hone their skills and try new mediums since 1922.

“A while ago, I came across a
quote,” said Abby, “it says, ‘Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the
comfortable.’ Well, that is my goal. I may not be the best, but I don’t
want to be. I don’t want to be the best artist in the world. I want
to be the artist that can create things that make people feel something. This award, this opportunity is probably the first sign that I’m progressing on
this. Now, I can’t wait for what comes next.”

“It is wonderful for both Abby
and our art department to be recognized,” said Arsenal Tech Principal Julie Bakehorn. “She is a great example of the
inspiring work our students are creating here at Tech.”

We’re proud of Abby and look forward to more creative works from her in the future!
