Like most parents in Indianapolis, our work doesn’t stop during school breaks. The fun doesn’t have to end for your child just because you’re working to provide for your family. There is a wide array of spring and summer break camp opportunities throughout Indianapolis to please every IPS family; offering everything from Arts to Academics, our students can choose from plenty of options.

1st MakerSpace: Spring & Summer Camp

What is a makerspace? It’s a place where students can create, invent and learn. The Makerspace organization supports and empowers students in Grades 3-8 to facilitate meaningful learning experiences, doing so by providing hands-on opportunities that enrich and add value to their education in the STEAM areas: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

This spring break, 1st MakerSpace will offer two “making” camp opportunities, Bubble Engineering and Home Mech.

  • Bubble Engineering: In celebration of National Bubble Week, students will have the opportunity to formulate the best bubble solution, explore and discover bubble geometry and the science behind it all, as well as design and build a bubble machine by using a 3-D printer.
  • Home Mech: Students that participate in this camp will gain knowledge in home maintenance. Students will have the opportunity to learn things including how to install a faucet, repair and replace broken household items, learn how to safely use hand and power tools and how to successfully solve problems with tough repairs.

1st MakerSpace also offers 3D Printing and Design summer camps. Students will have the chance to work individually and within teams to design and print their own original creations.

“Students will have the opportunity to discover new materials, tools and skills that they can apply in life or in a future career,” said Ben Carter, IPS Director of Career and Technical Education.

The all day camps are an excellent way for your student to stay engaged and have fun during school breaks. Times, locations and dates for both camp opportunities can be found here. Every student should have the chance to experience “making” regardless of circumstances. Through the support of donors and grant funding, 1st MakerSpace offers scholarships to those in need.  All summer camps will begin on June 6, but slots will fill fast. For locations, dates or to preregister, please visit the 1st MakerSpace website.
