A group of local high school students had a unique chance to meet a member of President Obama’s cabinet, as U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan brought his national bus tour to Indianapolis this week.

Hosted by Mayor Ballard’s office at Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School, Secretary Duncan sat down to talk with students from all over Marion County about their goals, successes, inspirations, and commitment to community service.

“This culture of service seems deeply engrained in you,” Secretary Duncan told the students. “A lot of adults might buy into the stereotypes about teenagers being self-absorbed, but you’re all out there proving them wrong.”

When Secretary Duncan asked the student panelists about their inspiration, Crispus Attucks Junior Kayla H. chimed in with her insight.

“I love to learn about our history and to share that knowledge with others,” Kayla said. “When someone is having a hard time at school or in life, learning about the struggles others have overcome helps you to know you can make it through, too.”

The important work IPS is completing with the Racial Equity Institute (REI) is receiving national attention, as Secretary Duncan discussed our inspiring and impactful training series with Dr. Patricia Payne. Dr. Payne welcomed the Secretary to the Crispus Attucks Museum and spoke with him about our efforts to increase equity and awareness as a district through intentional training sessions and workshops.
