When Riverside High School opened in 2017, it was using a temporary building on West 30th Street to educate the school’s approximately 140 freshman class. Its permanent location, the former Heslar Naval Armory, was under renovations.

Fast-forward to 2018 as Riverside staff welcomed old and new students back to school in August — but this time in its permanent home.

On Sept. 13, the school will host an official ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the occasion from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at 3010 N. White River Parkway East Drive. Riverside is a sister school to Herron High School, both part of Indianapolis Classical Schools and members of the IPS Innovation Network Schools.

Riverside and Herron students, staff and families, as well as the local community, are invited to the ceremony.

The event will begin with a reception, followed by remarks and tours of the building. During the tour, guests will get to see how the school kept various aspects of the historical building intact as an ode to it use as a naval armory.
