The
United Way ReadUP literacy
program is ready to roll for this school year! ReadUP Tutor training sessions
recently began on August 11 for the 2015-2016 school year and will run through
the end of September. United Way of Central Indiana launched the program in 2007 and is entering into its’ 9th year of tutoring sessions. Nearly
1,000 people volunteered in the ReadUP program last year that reached over 500
students. Consider
volunteering for this rewarding cause! After signing up as a volunteer, you will be matched with
local schools to tutor third/fourth graders to
reach grade level literacy. Each volunteer will commit to one hour per
week and this time is divided into two tutoring sessions with two
children.  Children in the ReadUP program have the opportunity to gain 90
minutes of reading practice each week and learn to build positive relationships
with adult role models. The program is focused on building student fluency and
comprehension; studies show that students who have
attended 50 or more sessions have boosted their ISTEP scores tremendously.

So what happens in a ReadUP training session? We sat in on one earlier
this week
and were just amazed! To start, everyone around
the room gave brief introductions
and explained why they decided to volunteer. Among the group we found a few
retired school teachers and college graduates, and the
others were just avid readers; all with something in common, a passion for
reading and a desire to give back to their community. One hour a week is
all it will take to impact the life of a child. Help us build students’ literacy in IPS and give back to your community. Visit http://www.uwci.org/register-for-readup-marion to register for the Marion
County ReadUP program today!
