Mentors from Park Tudor School The young
orchestra and band students of Nicholson Performing Arts Academy were busy
preparing for a big concert with their peer mentors from Park Tudor School,
thanks to a special partnership to help young musicians learn from one another.

Last year, Park
Tudor Band Director Chuck Flowers reached out to Nicholson music teacher
Michele Pickard with an idea for an initiative. He would
bring students to Nicholson once a
week to assist with after-school rehearsals and
students from both schools could benefit from peer mentoring
through music.

Pickard was on
board with the plan and the partnership began.

Park Tudor’s
band students had such a great time helping and learning from our
students, it wasn’t long before the high school orchestra
asked to join in on the fun! Each week, the high school students join
our young musicians to lead sectional rehearsals and help them through the new
music they’re learning.

“The kids
love it. They love having the older kids coming over to school for sectional
rehearsals,” said Pickard. “Because it’s worked out so well this
year, the Park Tudor music directors and I started talking about doing a
concert together.”

The concert
brought the opportunity for an all-day experience for Nicholson students. Band
and orchestra students took the bus from Nicholson to join their Park Tudor
counterparts for a morning of rehearsals, and even had the opportunity to eat
lunch with their new high school friends! After a music-filled day, the band
and orchestra groups from both schools showed off their year of hard work in a
joint concert at Park Tudor on April 21.

We’re so glad to see the
strong bond music has created between these groups of students.
Thanks to Park Tudor for hosting our performers!
