Indianapolis Public Schools is proud to be part of the eighth running of the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon (IMM), and our team is ready to run! This is the district’s fourth year to team up with IMM for the big event – more than 1,000 students from 28 schools are taking part in the races this Saturday, November 7.
IPS students interested in running at IMM are encouraged to participate in the Monumental Kids Movement; this 9-week program educated students on healthy eating and healthy living. Each week, students spent two or three sessions before or after school building up their stamina with cardio exercises and learning about proper nutrition to prepare for this weekend’s race. Students who attended 90 percent of their schools’ Monumental Kids sessions receive free entry to the 5K race Saturday morning.
“Every year we are inspired by the commitment of IPS students to the training program,” said IMM Executive Director Blake Boldon, “and we’re honored to work with such dedicated teachers and volunteers who make this program possible. Monumental Kids Movement is at the heart of what our organization aims to be. We want to make Indy a healthier city and our partnership with IPS is making a difference.”
“It’s an amazing program,” said Shortridge High School Athletic Director Kathy Langdon. “This program teaches students lifelong learning habits of eating healthy and setting goals while introducing students to running; this in turn will help our athletic programs at the next level. It is so rewarding for the students to be able to come together and be part of something so monumental and to complete their goal and to share it together with the entire district. The most important piece is the partnership that Indianapolis Monumental Marathon and IPS have. It keeps getting stronger and stronger!”
Some students are even choosing to run the mini marathon course! In addition to our runners, 300 IPS student athletes and supporters are volunteering to serve as course marshals and to clean up afterwards.
To make this exciting event happen and keep our runners safe, there will be some necessary road closures around the city this Saturday. Before you head to the race – or out for your weekend errands – check out the map below highlighting the courses and possible road closures:
We’re proud of the hard work our runners have put in this fall, and we look forward to seeing everyone in action at IMM this weekend!
