Did you know April
is National Poetry Month? In 1996, the Academy of American Poets established the world’s largest literary
celebration in honor of poetry. A group of emerging poets at Meredith Nicholson School 96 are celebrating National Poetry Month as
they prepare to become published writers!
Meredith Nicholson
Literacy Coach Jessica Barnes received funding from Donors
Choose last year to
initiate a school newspaper club. Each month, the club publishes and distributes a newspaper (The
Legend of 96) to all students and staff.
When the newspaper
team learned about a contest for the 2016 Young American Poetry Digest, they
focused their writing efforts on various forms of poetry – from haiku and
cinquain to free poetry and prose. The students’ efforts went on for more than
a month and were shared with the Meredith Nicholson community through the
February edition of the newspaper. All of their poems were submitted to the National
Schools Project for
consideration in the contest.
“I am extremely
proud of the effort of each of my newspaper students,” said Barnes. “They are
thrilled that their work is going to be published in the 2016 American Poetry
Digest and I am thrilled for them.”
In all, nine poems
by seven students were chosen for the publication, due out in October. Here’s
the award-winning work:
