Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School teacher Katie Knutson is taking her students across the pond – with a little help from the Internet and the Lilly Endowment! Knutson, one of five Indianapolis Public Schools educators to receive the Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Grant, is spending the summer in London and blogging her adventures for students to learn and enjoy. The Lilly grant is funding Knutson’s travel as she visits British historical locations and places of pop culture significance.
She’s documenting her travels through the blog, London Calling, and on social media so students can connect her journey to their studies. She’s renting a flat in the city as she visits landmarks, meets new people and immerses herself in British culture. Knutson teaches Social Studies, and this is her way of shedding a new light on the country so often discussed in her classes.
“My goal is to bring London to students in IPS by writing a blog and documenting my journey in pictures and video,” said Knutson. “I’m trying to make history fun and interesting as well as visit the popular landmarks that students know from movies and television shows.“
Be sure to follow the blog for Knutson’s take on British museums, landmarks, food, people and culture. We are delighted to see her innovative Social Studies adventure in action and can’t wait to see what’s in store for the rest of her journey!
