The Paciferous Poets, the poetry team at Kindezi Academy at Joyce Kilmer 69, recently attended the Quantum Leap Poetry Tour featuring U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith at the Indianapolis Public Library.
Students learned about Smith’s journey into poetry and participated in a question-and-answer session about the impact the art form had on her life. Smith’s book, “Life on Mars,” won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for poetry.
“The event was interesting because she was telling her story about poetry. I liked hearing her stories about her life because I have stories I want to tell, too,” said Samantha Patino-Noriega, 11, a sixth-grader.
Students on the poetry team have been working to publish their stories about leadership and their dreams.
“My dream is to be a doctor and a poet, and hearing her story inspired me to keep writing,” said Angie Ortiz, 12, a sixth-grader.
The students also met Indiana Poet Laureate Adrian Matejka. The poetry team shared that the experience has furthered their passion for writing.
According to Shanae Staples, school leader at Kindezi, the name of the poetry group originated from the students’ desire to broaden their vocabulary and expose others to obscure and unusual languages.
“They wanted to use alliteration with ‘poetry’ to make their name memorable,” said Staples. “They researched and found the word ‘paciferous,’ which means ‘peace-bringing.’”
