IPS to Host Sixth Rebuilding Stronger Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Year at Eliza Blaker School 55

Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) will host a groundbreaking ceremony at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, to kick off renovations at Eliza Blaker School 55.

This is the sixth spring groundbreaking event at IPS, made possible by the district’s Rebuilding Stronger Capital Referendum. More groundbreakings will take place this summer and next school year.

Voters overwhelmingly approved the Rebuilding Stronger Capital Referendum in May 2023 to support facility improvements at 23 IPS schools, including Eliza Blaker. A portion of the $410 million in funds from the referendum will be used to build a new full-size gym and a new media center at the school as well as expand academic and student support spaces, renovate the school’s kitchen and cafeteria, and rehabilitate outdoor facilities, including hard-surface play areas.

“Every family in Indianapolis deserves to feel excited about the school their children attend,” said IPS Supt. Dr. Aleesia Johnson. “Thanks to the support of this community,  we are delivering on that promise, creating vibrant, welcoming, and warm school buildings in every neighborhood.”

Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, IPS will offer eight new educational models to every family in the district as part of the Rebuilding Stronger plan. Eliza Blaker School 55 will remain the Reggio Emilia-inspired elementary school for Zones 2 and 3 serving kids in pre-K through 5th grade. Renovations are expected to be complete by Spring 2026. The school will continue to operate as normal amidst ongoing renovations. IPS is committed to ensuring the safety and convenience of students, families, staff, and the community during construction.
