Indianapolis Monumental Marathon participants are in for a treat this Saturday. Over 375 student athletes and all nine high school bands will volunteer along the race course, helping with set-up and directions, and providing entertainment!
John Marshall Assistant Principal Phil Shults is running the marathon for the second time and appreciates the IPS display of encouragement.
“When I ran it last year, I was excited to see IPS providing support throughout the race,” says Shults. “I remember Dr. Ferebee providing an introduction and thanks at the start, seeing Northwest students and coaches providing directions at turns, John Marshall’s drum line, and Broad Ripple High School’s band.”
Racers will see the same level of support this year! John Marshall Community High School JROTC will serve as the color guard with Broad Ripple Magnet High School student Kelly Thomas singing the Star Spangled Banner to start the race. George Washington student athletes will provide directions throughout the course and racers can see our high school bands at locations ranging from Mass Ave, the State Fair Grounds, Broad Ripple and Riverside Park!
“I’m excited to see over 300 IPS students partner as volunteers with the Monumental Marathon this weekend,” says IPS Athletic Director Enzley Mitchell. “It’s a great opportunity to have so many of our students involved with an event that has helped support the efforts of our students and district for the last six years.”
We’re so proud of our students volunteering to spend their Saturday morning supporting this exciting event!
