IPS Seeing Surge in Enrollment Applications for 2024-25

In a remarkable testament to the strength of its outreach initiatives, Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) is witnessing a significant surge in enrollment applications this year.

The district began the enrollment process on Nov. 1 with more than 800 families attending this year’s Showcase of Schools event, where school buildings opened their doors to give IPS families a sneak peek at the expanded options available to all students enrolled at IPS for the 2024–25 school year.

As of Dec. 6, 1,638 families have applied to one or more IPS schools through the streamlined enrollment platform, Enroll Indy. This is up from last year when 1,169 families had initiated the enrollment process in a little over a month.

The noteworthy jump in applications is a clear indication that the district’s dedicated efforts to engage with families and facilitate the enrollment process are not only making an impact but are also resonating positively with the community,  IPS Superintendent Dr. Aleesia Johnson said.

For the first time at Showcase of Schools, prospective families got to tour all school buildings, meet with principals, and explore the education models offered at IPS.

“For as long as I can remember, our most exciting and comprehensive offerings were concentrated in neighborhoods that were wealthier and whiter. Now, because of our Rebuilding Stronger Plan, all of our schools will have exciting offerings and programs — in every grade and in every neighborhood,”  Dr. Johnson said. “Whether or not you have kids enrolled at IPS, our doors are always open. We invite all Indianapolis families to explore what your IPS journey could look like.”

The Showcase of Schools marked the start of IPS’s first round of enrollment for the 2024–25 school year. There are four enrollment zones available — Indianapolis families are eligible for any school within their designated zone and can apply to up to 10 schools of their choice by creating an account through Enroll Indy’s One Match application (https://enrollindy.org). Applications for the first enrollment period are due by Jan. 24, 2024. A second enrollment period will begin on Jan. 25, 2024 and remain open until April 19, 2024.

“At the Showcase of Schools I could sense families’ excitement about all the great new choices at IPS,” Allen Mickens, principal of Ralph Waldo Emerson School 58, said. “There’s a lot to be excited about. For the first time in Indianapolis, we’re making sure every child in every neighborhood gets a great education, and every student feels welcome at every school. High-performing kids, kids who have special needs, kids who speak English as a second language, kids who are neurodivergent or LGBTQ — they are all equally welcome at IPS, and our schools are going to do everything we can to set them up to be the best versions of themselves they can be.”
