On Thursday, Dec. 10, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett and Marion County Public Health Department Director Dr. Virginia Caine provided COVID-19 updates for the county.
During the update, Dr. Caine said schools can return to in-person learning on Jan. 4. This is a change from the initial order to keep schools closed to in-person learning through Jan. 18 because of rising COVID cases.
IPS’ response to the MCPHD’s in-person learning date change:
“IPS does not anticipate shifting back to in-person learning on January 4 at this time. We believe it will be critical to assess the conditions and data after the Winter Break in order to make a determination if it is safe to return to in-person learning prior to the already scheduled January 19 date.
The safety of our students and staff continue to be our top priority. We will continue to leverage our return to in-person learning framework approved by the Board of School Commissioners in October.”
