IPS, IPS Foundation and Brogdon Family Foundation host Social Justice HBCU Tour

Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) in collaboration with the IPS Foundation and the Brogdon Family Foundation, will provide a seven day HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and Social Justice Tour for a group of 10th and 11th grade students from March 27-April 2, 2022.

Each visit will include a tour, Q&A with admissions representatives and students, and a classroom visit. Through HBCU classroom visits, students will learn the rich history of HBCUs and the contributions of their graduates to social justice movements, medicine, law, politics, and other important professions in the United States.

In addition to campus visits, students will explore the rich history of the civil rights movement and other social justice movements in the United States. Historic sites, museums, and memorials that will be included in the tour are The King Center, MLK National Historic Site, and Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, Georgia; the Equal Justice Initiative National Memorial for Peace and Justice as well as the Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Alabama; and the Tuskegee Airmen National Memorial Site in Tuskegee, Alabama.

Prior to each campus visit and visit to a historic site or museum, students will participate in a faculty-led discussion providing background and context to prepare them for each of the visits.
