“My class spent about a year and a half studying ‘We the People,’ so it was a fascinating experience to see the documents that the entirety of our learning was based upon,” said Sophia F. “Personally, my favorite part of the trip was the Illuminated Monument Tour. We got to walk around the city and see many of the monuments. We heard the stories of the soldiers’ memorials, such as the one with the medics looking up at the sky for a helicopter. My favorite part of the tour was the Vietnam Memorial. The names on the wall brought into focus the incredible sacrifices that those men and women made for our country.”
“I am a complete history buff,” said Gabriella B., “so the best parts for me were all the historic places we visited and learned from. My favorite part of the trip was definitely the Holocaust Museum. It was a life-changing experience for me, and I hope to return someday. I am so grateful our school has the ability to take us to Washington, D.C., each year, and I will never forget this opportunity.”
Sidener wasn’t the only school representing IPS in Washington; a group of students from Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School toured some of the highlights of our nation’s capital over spring break. In addition to three of the Smithsonian museums, students were able to visit Ford’s Theatre, where President Abraham Lincoln was shot. The group shared some emotionally moving experiences including the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a visit to the Holocaust Museum.
“Our students were able to connect what they are learning in the classroom with real and tangible places in Washington, which always helps keep learning fun and meaningful,” said Crispus Attucks Social Studies teacher Katie Knutson. “The highlight of our trip was seeing President Obama in his Presidential motorcade in front of the Washington Memorial. He smiled and waved at our group – very cool!”
