At a May 29 Board Retreat Commissioners permitted Dr.
Ferebee and the administration to review a myriad of data sources and consider
various factors to draft a district grade configuration plan. When developed,
the draft plan will be shared with our community – in large and small groups,
online and within neighborhoods – to gain widespread feedback prior to any
Board discussions about potential approval for implementation. These
discussions would not impact the 2015-2016 school year.
Commissioners unanimously expressed agreement with exploring
a shift from the grades 7-12 school model. School grade configuration
conversations would naturally take into consideration academic offerings and
student interests. The draft plan will be developed to improve academic achievement
for all students, expand existing excellence and allow greater marketability of
IPS instructional programming. While facilities utilization will certainly not
drive these discussions, more efficient use of school buildings would be an
added benefit to streamlining the current environment of twelve grade
configurations in the district.
