HUDDLE UP — Colts defensive end Tarell Basham huddles with students from Cold Spring School at the Indianapolis Colts practice facility on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017. Students received free dental hygiene services from Team Smile and had time to spend with Colts players, cheerleaders and other team employees.
On Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017, Team Smile partnered with the Indianapolis Colts and Cold Spring School — an IPS innovation school — to provide dental hygiene and oral health services to more than 300 Indianapolis Public School students.
Parents were excited about the opportunity and eager for their students to be involved.
Upon arrival to the Colts practice facility, students were greeted by Colts players, cheerleaders and team mascot Blue, along with dental hygienists and other volunteers. They exchanged high-fives through a human tunnel and were split into two groups for the duration of the day.
While one group received free dental and oral hygiene services from Team Smiles, the other group spent time with Colts players on the practice field. All students had their teeth cleaned and those who needed additional services got cavities filled and teeth pulled.
“I was scared at first, but once I was done with all of my dental work, I was really excited to go interact with the Colts players,” said Lundyn D., a Cold Spring sixth-grader.
In addition to receiving free dental services, students explored the Colts practice facility. They completed skills training, tossed the football with Colts players on the practice field, tackled dummies, jumped rope, and so much more!
Fourth-grader Noah D. said, “This is the best field trip I’ve ever been on!”
First-grader Reggie M. said he had a great time on the field trip. He especially liked playing with the Colts and said, “I didn’t mind getting my teeth cleaned either.”
