Stephen Foster school employees pose at their booth at Showcase of Schools. The first-ever Indianapolis Showcase of Schools held on November 22 at Circle Centre Mall was a rousing success for all the schools and the hundreds of families that took part.

From 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. all three levels of Circle Centre Mall were filled with great sounds from IPS student performers, great information from representatives of all IPS schools and lively conversations with families about the excellent academic opportunities and options the district has to offer.

“The Showcase of Schools event was an excellent opportunity to inform the community about the various programs and wonderful students we serve at John Marshall,” said Demetrice Smith-Mutegi, Community Intervention Coordinator for John Marshall Community High School.

Michele I. Pickard, the Band, Strings & Guitar teacher at the Nicholson Performing Arts Academy at School 70 said, “We had so many parents stopping to talk with us and asking us what we had to offer their student. This event provided me with a perfect opportunity to inform many parents about the hidden jewel Nicholson Performing Arts is within IPS.”

The five-star service the district offers was definitely on display at the George H. Fisher School 93 booth. Principal Amanda Pickrell told about a family relocating to Indianapolis from Chicago that stopped to talk to them. “Even though this family was moving to the Meridian-Kessler area, my teachers were helping [the father] identify schools near their possible new home. We directed him to their booths and showed him where Office of Student Assignment (OSA) was set up. He was floored when we told him he could register that day for school. He wrapped it up with, ‘This is so great and such a convenience for us! Thank you!’”

And Gambold Preparatory Magnet High School Principal Shane O’Day reflected on how perfect the setting was for the Showcase. “By our holding the Showcase of Schools at the mall, families understood that they have a choice of educational environments for their children. IPS recognizes that families have a choice, and we have strengthened the educational marketplace by highlighting all that IPS has to offer.”

We hope these encounters at the Showcase of Schools were just the start of an exciting relationship with IPS for families.
