Dear Parents:

Please encourage students not to share their hats, scarves, combs and brushes to prevent head lice from spreading.  As head lice are not a risk for carrying communicable disease, they are primarily spread through direct-head-to head contact.  The Indianapolis Public Schools takes the following procedure against head lice:

  1. Students suspicious of having head lice, the school will notify the parent/guardian via phone and a letter will be sent home with the student
  2. The parent/guardian will be instructed to notify hers/his physician for further treatment
  3. Parents/guardian are encouraged to laundry all pillow cases, clothing, bed linen, towels, combs, brushes and stuff animals in hot water.  Dry items on the highest setting.

Thank you for your continued support in preventing the spread of head lice.
