Indianapolis Public Schools will be represented in a prestigious international study program this summer! Gambold Preparatory Magnet High School Junior Jalen Vaughn will take part in World Learning’s Leadership Institute Program in South Africa.

Jalen was selected for a highly competitive study abroad program focused on youth leadership in connection with peace, politics and human rights. This project brings high school students from across the United States to Washington, DC, for an intensive training session followed by a four-week immersive experience in South Africa.

Jalen and his peers will take part in homestays (both urban and rural), community service projects and classes to examine the key points of human rights, multiculturalism and inequality internationally. His group will also visit the Nelson Mandela Foundation for a workshop in youth leadership.

“I look forward to being able to experience a society that was recently oppressed,” Jalen said about his upcoming travels. “I think this will give me an endless amount of perspective to bring to my hometown, and also to bring [service] programs and create them to be as effective as possible.“

After the immersive experience in South Africa, Jalen’s group will return to the United States for debriefings and reentry workshops before returning home. We’re thrilled for Jalen to have this educational opportunity, and we look forward to the new ideas he will bring home to IPS!
