TEARS OF JOY – Dave Smiley and other WZPL Radio employees surprised a mom from Francis Bellamy Pre-school Center with gifts for the holiday.
Christina Juarez wasn’t anticipating a very merry Christmas. Her 11-year-old daughter, Anadalay, is in Riley Hospital for Children with Stage 4 brain cancer. In between spending most of her time at the hospital, the single mom is also caring for two other children, a 4-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter.
Teachers and staff at Francis Bellamy Pre-school Center, where Christina’s son is a student, have been working overtime to support the mother in whatever way possible. That has included making meals for the family and most recently nominating her for the WZPL Twelve Trees of Christmas Giveaway.
Francis Bellamy was notified the family won! Members of the Dave Smiley Morning Radio Show visited the school on Monday, Nov. 27, to surprise Christina. She won a Christmas tree, tree decorations and a $500 gift card!
“Anadalay was just telling me that it wasn’t Christmas without a tree. I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to provide that for her. I’m so excited to be able to go to the hospital and tell her we have a Christmas tree,” said Christina. “I’m also excited that I’ll be able to buy the children whatever Christmas gifts they want.”
After the presentation, Christina broke down in tears saying she was overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of the school staff to nominate her for such a boost during what would have otherwise been a difficult holiday season.
“She is just so giving. She just makes me feel humble because she has so little and yet she offers everything she has,” said Ashley Reed, social worker at Francis Bellamy.
