Jasmine Nichols (10-years old) from Carl Wilde School 79 is an exceptional student in and out of the classroom. She continuously receives praise for her diligence, but today she’s being recognized for more than her academic prowess. Early last week Nichols made a lifesaving phone call to police dispatch after discovering her grandmother was unresponsive. Jasmine is now being saluted as a hero.

Mrs. Constance Reid, grandmother of Jasmine Nichols recently endured surgery and experienced an easy recovery up until this frightening night after a poor reaction to her medication. Jasmine’s poise and ability to think quickly on her feet undoubtedly saved the life of her grandmother. Jasmine credits her faith for the ability to work through this scary experience on her own.

Joined by IPS Police Chief Steve Garner, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett Joe Hogsett visited Carl Wilde Elementary School 79 to present the young hero with a certificate of recognition for her bravery. “The City of Indianapolis would like to acknowledge and recognize Jasmine’s bravery and her ability to take the lead during a life threatening situation. [Jasmine has brought] honor on herself and frankly her school, “said Mayor Hogsett. “[She is] an example to all the fellow students at Carl Wilde Elementary School and our community. As Mayor of the City of Indianapolis it is my honor to recognize [Jasmine] as a true community hero.”

After receiving her award, Jasmine addressed her peers; stressing the importance of knowing what to do and how, “If something like this happens [everyone should] learn how to dial 911, even if the phone is locked.”

We challenge our families to prepare children to react similarly if an unfortunate situation arises; we commend young Jasmine for her bravery.
