Indianapolis Public Schools strives to set the bar in innovative educational opportunities, and one of our teachers is raising the standard statewide. Tina Ahlgren is our IPS Teacher of the Year, and you can soon follow her year of service to the district! She will contribute a monthly blog to chronicle her adventures. You’ll find the debut of her blog on myips.org October 22!
This has been quite a year for Tina Ahlgren. In the spring, she was one of four recipients of the Hubbard Life-Changing Teacher Award. Personal accolades from her students put Mrs. Ahlgren on the short list for the $25,000 prize. She was then selected as the IPS Teacher of the Year, and she made it to the final three candidates for Indiana Teacher of the Year.
Students have praised Mrs. Ahlgren’s celebration of every success no matter how small and her patience with a variety of learning styles. Her willingness to change lesson plans to fit students’ needs and her unique approach to tough lessons have proven to be successful in the classroom. Mrs. Ahlgren continuously impacts the lives of her math students at Shortridge Magnet High School for Law & Public Policy. Her energetic and engaging teaching style sparked an increased success rate in the school’s Algebra I exams, which helped raise Shortridge’s grade from an F to a B. Last school year, every student who previously failed the Algebra I exam passed with the help of Mrs. Ahlgren’s exemplary guidance.
We’ve always known Tina Ahlgren was a special part of the IPS family – now you can get some insight on what makes her a remarkable teacher. Look out for her first blog post later this month!
