Floro Torrence’s physical education teacher, Brian Duffey, started a program at the school called “Run Across America.” Each time students run in gym class Duffey calculates the mileage, adds it together and marks the distance on a map of the United States.
The goal? Run from New Jersey to California.
“This is something the students can see visually,” Duffey said. “It’s a collective effort. We slowly move the line across the map.”
Duffey started the students out during gym class running for two minutes and walking for two minutes. Now the students are up to running for six minutes and walking for two minutes. Duffey’s goal is that eventually the students will work up to a 15-minute sustained run.
We’re proud to see our students going above and beyond to reach a common goal!
