“Most kids at other schools don’t get to go to dance and theatre class and choir. Some kids don’t even get to play instruments. We are so lucky to go to a magnet school because we get to know kids from all over Indianapolis.” Julieta P., a second-grade student at Nicholson Performing Arts Academy, sums up the impact of Indianapolis Public Schools’ magnet program.
Whether your student aspires to become a performer, doctor, lawyer, chef, engineer – or can’t narrow down their dreams yet – we have a magnet opportunity for you! Our magnet opportunities are as diverse as our wonderful community, and we invite you to explore our world-class options at a public school price!
If the arts are your student’s passion, Nicholson Performing Arts and Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts & Humanities are for you. Our students receive training from local professionals along with weekly private lessons – a necessity that usually comes at a significant cost to families!
Maybe your scholar’s mind is stimulated by Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Harshman Magnet Middle School provides students with excellent STEM opportunities, along with world languages. If science takes your child’s interest to the medical field, they can apply to attend our historic Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School.
Our students also take magnet tracks preparing them for vocational opportunities shortly after high school. Culinary students run their own restaurant, Colonel’s Cupboard, on Arsenal Technical High School’s campus. Arsenal Tech’s Cosmetology and Fashion/Textile students had some real-world experience when they recently did styling, hair and makeup for an IPS brochure photo shoot!
Rigorous academic opportunities through the International Baccalaureate program are also available to IPS magnet students. We have three Center for Inquiry schools serving students through 8th grade and one IB secondary school. The IB high school program currently at Gambold Preparatory Magnet High School will relocate to Shortridge High School in the fall of 2015. This week, the IPS Board of Commissioners approved a portion of a proposed redesign to our magnet programs. The Law and Public Policy magnet program currently housed at Shortridge will move to Arsenal Tech, home to many of our successful magnet programs.
“Our vision as a community isn’t only within the community, but within Indiana, within the country. We want to impact the world,” said Gambold Prep student Alexis Z. in a recent Twitter chat about our innovative academic programs.
“The IB program has allowed me to come from a troubled area and become that driving force to give back and help my community,” another Gambold student added to the conversation.
We’ve only highlighted a few of the amazing magnet opportunities available to IPS students. You can check out all of our magnet offerings, as well as all of our neighborhood schools, at the Showcase of Schools this Saturday, November 22. We’ll be at Circle Centre Mall from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., and we’d love for you to see why we’re so proud to be public!
Our magnet application window opens on November 22, so you can apply to any of our amazing schools right from the mall. We look forward to seeing you there!
