Over
the past two weeks, students from 18 IPS elementary schools joined their tutors
in celebrations marking another successful year of ReadUP, a unique and
rewarding collaboration between IPS and United Way of Central Indiana. Evidence
shows that ReadUP students who participate in two-three weekly tutoring
sessions improve their literacy skills, making more than a year’s academic
progress between September and April, and consistently outperforming their
peers on IREAD-3 and ISTEP+ ELA assessments.

We
look forward to launching the 9th year of this valuable partnership
in the fall! United Way’s ReadUP program managers will be contacting school
principals soon to establish tutoring schedules for the 2015-2016 school year.
United Way is currently recruiting volunteer tutors and will begin training
sessions for them in August.

To
learn more and experience the rewards of helping young students, consider
volunteering as a Summer ReadUP tutor. Research indicates that students from
low-income households lose an average of two-to-three months of learning during
the summer. Partnering with local community centers, United Way of Central
Indiana is offering a seven-week ReadUP program to help combat the effects of
summer learning loss. Register to tutor here!

Congratulations
to all our IPS ReadUP students and special thanks to their dedicated volunteer
tutors for nurturing their growth as capable, eager readers!
