Empowering IPS Students Through the 2023 APEX Benefits Monumental Kids 5K

About 1,000 students from Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) are gearing up for the 2023 APEX Benefits Monumental Kids 5K, scheduled for Saturday morning at Lucas Oil Stadium.

“This event is not just a race. It’s a celebration of students who have participated in their school-based running clubs, and it’s an opportunity for them to shine,” said Kathy Langdon, the district’s wellness and health coach. “At the heart of this event is the dedication and hard work of IPS students who have been training tirelessly to prepare for the 5K run.”

Since the start of the school year, students have been putting in the effort, training twice a week to ensure they are ready for the big day. Running clubs have become a regular part of their routine as they build stamina and resilience.

Langdon said the race is popular among IPS students because it is more than a simple run after several weeks of intense training.

The program offers students a sense of accomplishment. The combination of training and the thrill of finishing a 5K race is unlike anything else, and it’s a testament to their hard work and dedication, she said.

Jed Cornforth, executive director for Beyond Monumental, said the Monumental Kids 5K isn’t just about running. Rather, it’s about holistic well-being by equipping students with essential life skills related to health and wellness, including learning about making healthy choices, opting for water or milk over sugary drinks, and understanding the importance of nutrition.
