On December 15, Edson Gonzalez Garcia, a 1st grader at Daniel Webster School 46, and his Cub Scout Pack 9265 were invited to take part in the 19th Annual Governor’s Luncheon for Scouting. Scouts from different troops were there, but Edson’s pack was one that actually got to shake hands with Governor Mike Pence!
Edson and his pack were selected in part because of the hours of community service they put in cleaning up Garfield Park. Edson said to do the job they wore gloves and chased trash that was blowing in the wind around the park, but it was worth it.
“It helps animals to pick up trash,” Edson said. “Everyone in the same community depends on each other. We depend on each other, and we depend on the animals.”
Edson’s mother, Maria Garcia, the Committee Chair of his Cub Scout Pack, is pleased at what Edson is learning through his scouting community service. “I’m really excited that he knows respect for nature and for all people in the community.”
Karen Linn, Edson’s principal at Daniel Webster said, “We are so very proud of Edson!”
We are, too. It’s great to have one of our youngest students showing us all that with a little time and effort anyone can make a difference in their community!
