Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities student Ruby Smith is a national finalist for the 2014 Maytag Dependable Leader Award.

The Maytag Dependable Leader Award recognizes Boys and Girls Club professionals and volunteers who are committed to making a difference in the lives of local youth.

Ruby has been a member of the Lilly Boys and Girls Club for 10 years. Ruby has participated in 95 percent of the Club’s programs and completed nearly 100 hours of volunteering.

In 2013, Ruby received a grant to create a literacy program called “Look In a Book,” which helps Club teens and youth, ages five to 10 years old. Teens read aloud to groups of young members, helping them begin their literacy development by building their skills. The overall goal of the program is to increase each member’s fluency and help them pass the English Language Arts portion of the ISTEP. All 2013 participating members passed the exam and progressed to the next grade level.
