“We’re here today to celebrate academic excellence – we’re sending a message to our district and our community that we are a school which sets a standard of excellence.”

These words from Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities Principal Dr. Briant Williams set the tone for the school’s inaugural Winter Honors Convocation. At this semi-formal affair, 250 scholars were recognized; their parents received personalized invitations in the mail welcoming them to the ceremony and a VIP reception.

The Dawning of a New Era: Excellence in Academics, Character and Service was the convocation theme; speakers including Broad Ripple Magnet High School students, staff and guests shared thoughts centered on raising expectations and supporting the new mindset of the school. As part of Broad Ripple Magnet High School’s new era, students were introduced to the “Five Wells,” a set of expectations aimed at raising standards for students and shedding a positive light in the community. The Five Wells include:

  • Well-Dressed: Appearance matters when you’re trying to make a positive first impression
  • Well-Engaged: Striving for positive, productive and peaceful relationships will foster success
  • Well-Balanced: Achieving a balance between work and play will make students happier and better able to adapt to change
  • Well-Read: Acquiring a broad knowledge base is paramount to academic success
  • Well-Spoken: Using polite and precise knowledge to build others up rather than knock them down can help to improve the world around you

“You are sitting in a space and time where you have proven the common narrative of young people wrong,” Dr. Williams told students. “You represent the fact that not all young people are doing the wrong thing.”

Representatives from our community, Broad Ripple Magnet High School administration, and the Indianapolis Public Schools leadership team were in attendance to congratulate students as they were recognized in front of their peers. Students on the Honor Roll, High Honor Roll or Principal’s List received a certificate during this celebration of their academic achievement.

Broad Ripple Magnet High School’s talented musicians contributed to the celebration as well. Students from the band and choir performed, and BRMHS alumna Kelly Thomas returned to share an inspiring song with her former classmates.

This is only the beginning of the story for Broad Ripple Magnet High School academics. Dr. Williams shared with students that convocations celebrating academics will be held every semester, giving students who weren’t on the Honor Roll this semester a chance to work toward this special recognition.

“We want to take control of changing the narrative in our school and in our community,” said Dr. Williams. “If we can hold pep rallies for athletics, certainly we can take the time to recognize academic achievement.”
