Our valedictorians and salutatorians all have promising
college plans, but only one already has a career waiting for him! Seth S.,
Arsenal Technical High School salutatorian, is already on his way to a
successful future as a certified diesel mechanic!

Seth has shown great internal motivation in his time at the
Career Technology Center (CTC), and it’s already paying off! Caterpillar Inc.
is sending Seth to Owens College, a trade school in Ohio, for two years before
he completes his undergraduate degree at IUPUI. After that, he’ll already be in
the pipeline for a career in the company with a competitive wage!

“After his first year in the CTC Diesel class, Seth was
selected for a summer internship with Caterpillar,” said CTC Assistant Director
Linda Casey. “He did so well, they asked him to continue during the school
year while he worked toward his Diesel II certification.  In addition to
this 20 hour-a-week paid internship, Seth has juggled a second job and has not
missed a day of school.”

Seth’s commitment to excellence doesn’t stop at the CTC
doors; he has taken Honors Biology and Algebra II as well as AP Spanish, Human
Geography, U.S. History, and English Lit. As a member of the National Honor
Society, Seth has responsibilities on the campus-wide recycling team.

It’s no surprise that Seth’s favorite aspect about IPS is
our CTC, offering a variety of career pathways to high school students.

“I believe the career classes that IPS has are the best
thing we provide for our kids,” Seth said. “Continue to teach these kids
trades; that will give them a chance to stay out of the streets.”

We are so proud of Seth, and can’t wait to see his hard work
lead him to great success with Caterpillar!
