After three and a half weeks and over 8,000 miles traveled
through Europe, Gregg Nowling, Media Specialist from Arsenal Tech High School,
has returned to share his experience. Nowling was one of five IPS teachers
awarded a Lilly Endowment Teacher Creativity Fellowship for this summer.
As a huge fan of the hit show Dr. Who, Nowling was pleased with being challenged by a student to
visit the last standing call boxes (familiar to Dr. Who fans as the TARDIS) in England. He used his $10,000 grant
to fund this experience and documented the trip to share with his students. Now
that he has returned, he plans to use his findings to write a book and build a
full-size replica of the TARDIS.
For Nowling, this trip was much more than research, he said “My
family is originally from Scotland. Walking the land that my family came from
was a huge, deep and profound experience for me.” He was granted the opportunity
not only to touch his family roots, but also to visit the places that his
favorite authors called home.
We are excited to hear all of the details of his trip and to
see his creative spark shine with his TARDIS replica. Be sure to cruise through
