The Indianapolis Monumental Marathon celebrated its 15thanniversary this year, in which time it has grown to one of the nation’s largest marathon events with nearly 15,000 registered participants! As has been the recent tradition, IPS high student athletes came out to serve as volunteers to help give these marathoners a great experience once again this fall. In the days leading up to the race, the Shortridge girls basketball team and George Washington boys basketball, volleyball, and cheer teams helped hand out race shirts, bibs, and information packets to the participants at the Monumental Expo, held at the Indiana Convention Center, as they prepared for the big day.
Race day came on Saturday November 5, as enthusiastic runners, spectators, and workers came out before sunrise despite the rainy conditions. IPS District Director of Athletics Darren Thomas served as an honorary starter for the event, and during the race, Shortridge’s soccer teams, cheerleaders, and JROTC ran aid stations throughout the course, while the Arsenal Tech cheer team and boys basketball team served participants at the gear check, and Crispus Attucks’ boys basketball team handed out food to the runners after they completed the course.
With over 150 volunteers from IPS Athletics, this was a great opportunity for our student athletes to interact and serve community members from across the State and beyond, while helping to put on one of Indianapolis best events!
