Saturday afternoon saw our Blue Devils of Shortridge welcome an extremely solid Greenwood Christian Academy (GCA) for a a boys basketball showdown. An early candidate for game of the year, these two teams were involved in a back & forth affair, that needed overtime to decide a winner.
Shortridge came out with great energy to begin the game, jumping out to an early lead to end the first quarter. They continued the solid play on both ends of the floor into the second quarter, but halfway through, GCA caught fire from deep & cut the deficit to two entering halftime.
Momentum shifted to GCA in the second half, as they continued to shoot it well, & lock in on the defensive end of the court. It was Shortridge, who at one point found themselves down six in the third quarter, faced an uphill climb as they fell out of rhythm.
It was behind the remarkable tough shot making of Terrence Meredith & Izzy Macon that kept Shortridge in it as we headed towards a dramatic finish. It was in overtime, with Shortridge down two with eight seconds remaining, where they got over the hump. A catch in the corner, it was Izzy Macon, who shot the ball as soon as it touched his hands. Never grazing the rim, the ball swished through the basket, with a roar from the players to follow.
A Hail Mary shot from GCA at the buzzer fell short, & it was the Blue Devils who got the huge win at home.
